Americans abroad: Statistics

American Expatriation Statistics

Clipart-GraphAccording to unofficial estimates from the US State Department, in 2011 there were 6.32 million Americans living abroad (aaro.org), almost twice as many as the estimated 3.8 million from 1999 (the last year the US State Department officially estimated the number of Americans living abroad). Also, it’s very important to keep in mind that these numbers are just estimates, and most likely fall short of the real numbers considering the high volume of Americans expats living abroad that don’t get residency in the host country or register at the American embassy.

This trend is predicted to continue growing in the coming years. Forrester Research forecasts that by the year 2015 there will be an additional 3 million Americans living abroad (Wennersten, 2008), bringing the estimated volume to close to 10 million American expats.
